ATON's Loden coat is updated for modern lifestyles while still incorporating original details. The underarms are closed for a contemporary fit.
Loden coats were originally worn by Austrian nobility during hunts. They were made from a unique fabric called Loden cloth, woven in the Tyrol region and then fulled for warmth and wind resistance. From the mid-18th century, they became a staple in Europe as everyday wear and have remained a classic ever since.
Designed for hunting, the coat features distinctive details such as open underarms for raising the arms, a floating shoulder and unique sleeve construction for ease of movement, a relaxed A-line silhouette, and a large back pleat for enhanced mobility.
The material is woven in the city of Hashima, Gifu Prefecture, using 16-micron fibers, as fine as cashmere. The finishing process involves thorough fulling using a special recipe, followed by shearing the surface to create a short-pile, 100% wool Mossa fabric.
Because wool fibers have scales, fulling causes them to interlock and shrink. This process results in a lightweight and soft Mossa fabric that traps a lot of air.
The ATON original fabric has a unique, slightly matte appearance, excellent heat retention, and a luxurious feel.

There is a 5mm area of slightly thinner nap on the right sleeve, which is not noticeable from a distance (see images 16 and 18).
